Distinguished and Famous people from Glenelg

✈️ Jimmy Melrose

Aviator Jimmy Melrose grew up at Glenelg before gaining national attention for long-distance flying. In 1934 he completed a solo flight around Australia and entered the MacRobertson air race from England to Australia, aged just 21. His achievements came during a period when such journeys demanded endurance, navigation and considerable mechanical confidence. He died in an air crash in 1936, cutting short a strikingly brief career. Glenelg’s connection is his upbringing beside the coast, before a succession of flights carried his name much further afield.

🎾 Adrian Quist

Adrian Quist attended Glenelg Public School before continuing at Pulteney Grammar, where he captained the tennis team. He became an Australian singles champion and an outstanding doubles player, partnering John Bromwich in major victories and helping Australia win the Davis Cup in 1939. His sporting-goods career had another lasting consequence: he helped introduce the herringbone-soled Dunlop Volley shoe, drawing on footwear he and Bromwich had used overseas. School tennis thus preceded a career influencing both the international game and the shoes worn by many Australians far from a championship court.

⚖️ John Jefferson Bray

John Jefferson Bray attended Mrs Hill’s school at Glenelg before further education in the Clare Valley and Adelaide. He became a barrister, South Australia’s chief justice, a university chancellor and a poet. His literary life remained substantial alongside the law, including plays, translations and regular appearances at Writers’ Week. Clear language and historical reasoning marked his judgments, while classical reading informed both professions. Glenelg’s connection is an early school, part of the education behind a public figure who never confined his curiosity to the courtroom.
